Most of the fighting was around the enclosure of Christ Church and the men of the HMS Hazard ended up losing a third of their numbers. 6 were killed and named as:
Colour Sgt JMM McCarthy RMLI aged 33, Pte Alex May aged 26, W. Lovell (seaman) aged 24, W. Love aged 26, Whit Denby aged 34, Frederick George Miniken aged 23.
Kororareka on 10th March 1845, the day before it was destroyed. The ships are the Hazard, the Victoria and the Matilda. By GT Clayton, from Alexander Turnbull Library ref C-010-022 |
Robertson was also wounded and after a long struggle the ones remaining were were forced to retreat. Later in the day after people from the town had been taken to to ships waiting in the bay the HMS Hazard bombarded Kororareka. Most of the town was looted then burned the following day.
Lastly Liz and I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas for tomorrow, we hope to bring you more history for 2023.
