The Grand Hotel

In Whangarei on Bank Street is this old gem. The Grand Hotel in Whangarei was originally called The Commercial Hotel but was renamed after the 1953 Royal Tour of New Zealand by HRH Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh who stayed there with their entourage.

The original hotel was built in approx 1870 but burned down in the 1890s but was rebuilt in 1900. The balcony from where the Queen waved to her subjects is still a feature of the building.

The balcony from where the Queen waved to her subjects is certainly still lovely. It makes a hotel, even a grand one, look palatial.
