Lui and Ethel Matthews

I'm loving this photo dated from 1899 to 1900 of the Matthews family of Whangarei. Pictured from left is Ethel, her son Geoff and her husband Ludolph Joseph Matthews. Ethel and Lui married in 1898 and Geoff was born in 1899. The family lived at Aurere north of Taipa in the far north and Lui was the grandson of the Rev. Joseph Matthews who was the original Matthews settler to the area. Lui was a member of the Mangonui County Council, the first Peoples Warden at the Kaitaia Anglican Church, a layreader and a member of the Kaitaia Vestry.
