Okaihau 1st World War Memorial



On the outskirts of Okaihau is this large concrete memorial dedicated to those who fought in the 1st World War from this particular area.  Okaihau being a very small town had a male population in the 1911 census of approx 500. Although men were eager to sign up the absence of them was felt and the women banded together to care for the children as well as take on the mens jobs on farms and in factories.


With the war officially ending on 11th November 1918 some of those listed above are buried overseas and some in the local cemeteries.

It is a sobering thought that memorials like this one are all over the world in countries down to the smallest villages
