St Mary's Church, Kohukohu

On our last visit to Kohukohu last week we decided to drive through some of the little streets in the town which are very much like a rabbit's warren. We stopped at this historical church so I could have a look around.

Saint Mary's Anglican and Methodist church sits on top of a hill and was built around 1891. The door was locked so I was unable to go in but I managed to take this one photo of the interior which I am assuming to be the kitchen/gathering area through one of the windows.

The designs were furnished by the Rev Mr Walsh of Waimate North and are gothic in style. The dimensions of the building were to be 44 feet by 18 and aim to seat about 100 people. The choir seats are to be raised as also is the sanctuary and the altar.

The floor and bottom of the church is made of Totara and the upper portion is Kauri. Bishop Cowie consecrated the building when it was finished. Messrs Olive and son won the contract for the work and was finished around June. A solid silver communion service was presented to the church by Mrs Yarborough of England who was the mother of Mr Yarborough, a local resident of Kohukohu.
