The Russell Cannon

I spotted this cannon in Russell earlier this week. The sign says the following:

The old cannon first arrived in Kororareka as ballast in the ship "Sourabaya" which was found to be unseaworthy and was broken up here in 1840.  The old cannon was installed with 2 others on the lower slopes of Maiki Hill until 1889 when it was sent to an exhibition in Dunedin. On it's return it was placed on it's present site in 1917. The Russell Museum renewed the replica gun carriage in 1992/93 as part of it's policy to support and enhance the heritage of Kororareka.

Used as ballast? I wonder what war the cannon was first created for.
