St Barnabas Anglican Maori Church


This church is about 30 minutes from Mangonui and is a historic category 2 place.  The St Barnabas Anglican Maori Church was built by the Peria community for Rev Renata Tangata who was ordained at St Paul's Cathedral in Auckland in 1867. By 1912 that building had become to small for the growing congregation in Peria and a new one was built to replace it. It was dedicated as St Barnabas and opened by Bishop Crossley on March 26 1912 - this is the building we see today. Thank you to Stuart Park for this information.

I am very pleased that the Anglican Maori Church has survived since the 1860s and still looks to be in good condition. Is there any difference between a Maori Church and a non Maori Church in either structure or rituals?
