Motukaraka's Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Churh of Our Lady of the Assumption is located in Motukaraka, across the water from Rawene and was built near the Hokianga Mission (Horeke) by the Mill Hill Missionaries who inspired a revival of Catholic missions in the Auckland region during the latter part of the 19th century.

The missionary priests learned te reo and this church was larger and more expensive to build than than the average Mill Hill buildings. It was opened in 1910 by Dean Lightford and is associated with Father John Baptist Becker, one of the Mill Hill Missionaries who translated the new testament into te reo who is also buried next to the church.

These days the church is part of the Ngai Tupoto marae next door. Information from Heritage NZ.

To build a lovely church, the church dignitaries must have been responding to nearby families who wanted a local place for services, marriages and funerals. In a rural area like this, how many families could have walked to Our Lady of the Assumption in 1910, or perhaps travelled by horse and cart.
