Rahiri Marae

Te Houhanga Marae is located just outside of Dargaville. The meeting house, above (wharenui) is named Rahiri and was built in 1914. Most of the carvings were created by members of Ngati Porou on the North Island's East Coast of Aotearoa. Above each window on the left and right sides are canoe (waka) one named "Matatatua" in honour of the Mataatua Canoe and the other is named "Matawhaorua" - both canoes are of major importance. No names in the photo are included.
