Opening of Waipu Post Office

Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections AWNS-19080319-16-2

Waipu is a small coastal town about 1 hour and 30 minutes north of Auckland and about 20 minutes south of Whangarei. It was originally founded by settlers who left Scotland, stopping in Nova Scotia before settling here.  On 28th February 1907 it was decided that the town needed a post office so tenders were held through the Public Works Office.

NZ Herald, 8 March 1907

And on 9th April 1907 a local resident Mr A. W. Mackay won the tender.

And this is what the current building looks like now, although it is no longer a post office but it looks like it's part of the local library. Photo taken from google maps.

A great honour for them to have the PM opening the PO, doubt that many people would be interested if our current PM did that, he would her heckled and booed

The later photo is not the old post office, it is the Coronation Hall. The Old Post Office is now the Pizza Barn and is at the eastern side of township.
