RIP Alfred Saies

Totara North is packed with history, in particular the local cemetery which is full of some of the earliest settlers to the far north of Aotearoa. Alfred Saies was born in Whangaroa in 1879 to Josiah Hart Saies and Alice Charlotte Saies.

He had 9 brothers and 4 sisters, interestingly enough Alfred and 5 of his brothers all fought in world war 1. Alfred in particular was part of the NZ Rifle Brigade 2nd Bn. 3rd as a rifleman. He died at the Somme in France on 23rd September 1916. He is buried with his parents Josiah and Alice in the same plot. Lest we forget.

The plot looks like it has been neglected for a while, a forgotten family
