Timoti Puhipi

I found this memorial online and knew it was special. Located in Kaitaia it is remembering a Maori chief named Timoti Puhipi (Timothy Busby) who was an immediate descendant of the original Busby family especially James Busby who helped William Hobson write the Treaty of Waitangi.

Timoti was born in Te Rarawa in 1830 was baptised at 10 years old. He witnessed many tribal disturbances  in particular one at Oruru when the Tarawara and Ngapuhi became embroiled in warfare with each other. He was appointed as a Native Assessor but resigned in 1888 when he stood for a candidate for the Northern Maori electorate in the House of Representatives but was unsuccessful.

He died in 1910 aged 80 and is buried in the Te Rangihaukaha Urupa in Kaitaia.
