Another local hero - Henry Snowden

North Auckland Hero - Mr Henry Snowden who recently at Dargaville rescued a girl from drowning and on the same day removed a blazing film from a picture theatre preventing the fire from spreading. The Auckland Star from 19th November 1925 says this: "Fire last night in the operating box of the Pukehuia Settlers Hall destroyed a film to the value of 500 pounds. A picture performance was proceeding when the film caught fire igniting other films in the room. While the operator Mr Currie was extinguishing the flames on the reel, Henry courageously rushed into the operating box and carried out the blazing film - he was severely burned. He also was the hero of another brave act earlier that day when he rescued a girl from drowning in the Wairoa River."

Henry Snowden was born in 1881 in Kaihu, Dargaville - his father John Haki Snowden was 30 and his mother Meri Tiiwe Netana was 15. He registered for military service in 1915 and after a long life he passed away aged 78 and was buried at Eden Terrace in Auckland.
