Sophia Anne Letts, Kaeo


Sophia Anne Skinner was born in 1861 in Kawhia, Waikato, New Zealand to the Reverend Thomas Farrenden Skinner and Hannah Chaffinch Taylor. When she was 5 years old her father died of a heart attack and her mother married for the 2nd time to Joseph Hare (a methodist preacher from Ireland) who already had 11 children of his own.  They moved to Kaeo and were active members of the Seventh Day Adventists

She married Francis Letts on 2nd April1883 and they had 7 children; Margaret, Laura, Francis, Winifred, Sophia, Martha and Ruth and was a teaching assistant at Te Maori Native School from 1898 to 1901. She died on 24th June 1912 aged 51 after suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis and is buried at Kaeo Cemetery.
