Mangonui's Old Oak Hotel

2 years ago before we officially moved to Kerikeri we drove through Mangonui and noticed this old building named "The Old Oak Hotel". This one is from 1861 and is a registered heritage building. Now a boutique hotel with 6 bedrooms it was once owned by John McIntosh when the district was seeing a decline in the whaling industry but even so it bought lots of people from nearby flax and kauri mills as well as crew from passing boats in the area.

According to their website alot of work has been completed over the years to renovate and restore it to what it looks like today including repiling and renovating.

It's got quite an interesting background Amy. It was initially called the Mangonui Hotel. It didn't get renamed the Old Oaks until after 1906 when the Settlers Hotel was built. The licence holder made an application to transfer the licence to the new building. I'm about to do a Wikipedia article on it since it's Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga listed
